About Me :
I have always been interested in Karate but my family could not afford to send me. When I turned 17 years old (1989) I started working on a farm milking cows. My Dad took me to a Karate School on Merrimon Ave. in Asheville, NC. I meet the Karate Instructor and had three free classes ( this was not the place for me). I still looked for the right place, the right school. One day while in the weight room I saw a flyer that said, "Karakido Karate Opening Soon in Leicester." I thought to myself this may be the one and it was a lot closer to home. To make a long story short I went and talked to the instructor, Patrick Bohannon, at the time a 3rd dan in karate.
I was his first student and I started a week before he officially open up. I studied several styles under Sensei Bohannon.
* Karakido Karate
* Akiakai Karate
* Boxing
* Kickboxing
* Judo
* Aikido
In 1994, we had to close the Dojo due to the widening of Leicester Hwy. We went to train some under Sensei John Thomas, who was a 3rd Dan in Shuri-Ryu Karate. He received his rank from Lorraine Lewis ? 7th Dan
THE DRAGON WING DOJO
He is a 3rd Dan under Shihan Carl Wilcox (Director of Center For Martial Arts) .
This will wrap up my background in the Martial Arts. I have known Shihan Carl Wilcox since 1991. The first time I met him was at the Dojo on Leicester Hwy. Sensei Bohonnan would let Shihan use the Dojo to train in. In 1994, my wife went to meet Shihan Wilcox and signed me up for three months. I enjoyed every class I had with Shihan and was envious of his knowledge. I had meet someone that I could look up to and respect. I left the Martial Arts for a while, but I always had a longing to go back. About five years ago my oldest son, Corey, started Karate at CMA. My desire to train was so strong, but I did not have the time. Then three years later my son, Cody, started training. I had to go on deck with him, because he was very shy. Man! It felt good to be in the Dojo again with a Gi on. Wow!!!! What a feeling! So began my training again. Some times Shihan would take me aside and show me some cool moves. (Thanks Shihan) This past summer I was promoted to Orange Belt in Kwanmuzendokai. I am, "God willing," going to continue studying and get my Black Belt in this style as well.

I ran the program for 9 weeks and I had some good feedback from the teachers. My students grades had come up and there attitude on life was changing.
The Martial Science will continue this year at Buncombe Community School. It will not be an after after school program as it was before. Now our Students will be able to do the Martial Science Program During Crew ( "which is our Mentoring Program" Crew will meet twice a month).
